OpenAI realizes the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate global opportunities. In line with this, the organization has expanded its European presence by establishing a new office in Dublin, Ireland, publishing the announcement on its website last Wednesday. Throughout the year, OpenAI aims to build a team in Ireland that will contribute to the advancement of operations, trust and safety, go-to-market strategies, security engineering, and legal matters, all in alignment with its commitment to improving service in the European market.
Founded in 2015 Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Trevor Blackwell, Vicki Cheung, Andrej Karpathy, Durk Kingma, Jessica Livingston, John Schulman, Pamela Vagata, and Wojciech Zaremba, the initial board members included Sam Altman and Elon Musk.
Comprising of two entities, the non-profit OpenAI, Inc. and its for-profit subsidiary, OpenAI, L.P., its primary mission is to conduct AI research, aiming to develop “safe and beneficial” artificial general intelligence — systems capable of outperforming humans in economically valuable tasks.
Talented Workforce
The tech and startup ecosystem in Ireland, particularly in cities like Dublin, Cork, Galway, and Limerick, has demonstrated significant growth and progress. There is a willingness to engage in collaboration with the government to assist in the implementation of their National AI Strategy. Additionally, OpenAI is keen to cooperate with industry players, startups, and researchers to gain insights into priorities and ideas for advancing AI development and deployment in the region.
On the move to the Emerald Isle, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said:
“Ireland blends a talented workforce with support for innovation and responsible business growth. We’re excited for this partnership as we expand in Europe.”
As part of this effort, OpenAI has initiated actions to provide technology access and mentorship. This includes partnering with the Irish youth accelerator, Patch, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting exceptional individuals aged 16–21 as they embark on entrepreneurial projects, facilitating their learning and development.
Building AI Ecosystem
“IDA Ireland welcomes the decision by OpenAI to establish a European presence in Dublin. Ireland is a recognized hub for administrative, regulatory, and innovation activities for the world’s leading digital companies. OpenAI’s investment confirms this and endorses Ireland’s focus on building a flourishing AI ecosystem,” said Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland.
Apart from Ireland’s AI vision, there has been a notable collaboration within the Irish community across various sectors, including the private sector, academia, government, and startups. OpenAI actively engaged with these stakeholders to solicit their feedback, aiming to establish a strong partnership with the region. This represents a noteworthy milestone in OpenAI’s journey, enhancing its capacity to gain a deeper understanding of, serve, and collaborate with European partners, users, and customers.
“In order for Ireland to benefit from AI, it is essential to ensure that we have a strong, supportive ecosystem in place and we believe that companies such as OpenAI operating in Ireland can help build on our foundation to support emerging AI research and innovation, and ensure our workforce is well prepared,” said Simon Coveney, Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment.
