Musk Tells Reporters AI Poses a Threat to Humankind at Bletchley Park Summit

At the UK’s prestigious AI safety summit, more than 100 influential figures, including Elon Musk, the head of SpaceX, Tesla, and X, gathered to discuss crucial issues related to AI. Among the attendees were Sam Altman from OpenAI, Demis Hassabis from Google DeepMind, and US Vice President Kamala Harris.

In an interview with Sky News yesterday, Musk emphasized the potential risks associated with AI, a sentiment he has consistently shared, even warning of AI’s capacity to cause the “destruction of civilization” earlier this year.

“It’s a risk,” answered Musk when asked whether he still believed AI was a “threat to humanity” while also expressing his inclination towards having an independent, “third-party referee” overseeing and regulating the industry.

Leaders from 28 nations, including the most prominent forces in AI, agreed to the Bletchley Declaration during the summit, underscoring the importance of international cooperation to maximize the benefits of AI while ensuring public safety. The declaration is named after Bletchley Park, the site of the UK’s World War II codebreaking efforts, which also served as the venue for the two-day summit beginning on Wednesday.

“It’s not clear to me if we can control such a thing [AI],” he told the PA news agency. “But I think we can aspire to guide it in a direction that’s beneficial to humanity.”

After the summit on Thursday, Musk is scheduled to engage in a live discussion with Rishi Sunak on X (previously known as Twitter). Both individuals have expressed concerns about dystopian scenarios related to AI, ranging from terrorists creating bioweapons to humanity losing control over the technology. However, their views on regulation diverge; Musk has been an outspoken advocate for regulatory measures, seeking support from the US Congress in September. Sunak, conversely, has urged caution, warning that excessive regulation could hamper innovation.
