Launched in May of this year by notable figures in the industry, Mistral AI, a French artificial intelligence (AI) startup, quickly raised 105 million euros in June. The company’s recent fundraising efforts, led by Andreessen Horowitz, a Californian fund, brought in an additional 385 million euros ($414 million), bringing its total funding to nearly 500 million euros. This valuation elevates Mistral to the status of a French tech unicorn, with a valuation of two billion euros, matching the funding levels of Germany’s Aleph Alpha, another European AI leader.
Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral, views this latest funding as a significant advancement in the company’s growth. This development in the European AI sector aligns with the European Union’s efforts to regulate AI technology without stifling regional innovation. Recently, EU member states and lawmakers reached an agreement on drafting AI regulatory rules, balancing the promotion of innovation with the need for governance.
Mistral AI has garnered support from several major American tech firms, including Salesforce and Nvidia, indicating Silicon Valley’s interest in the startup’s rapid progress. With just 22 employees, Mistral offers open-source language models using public data, similar to its competitors. US media have noted Mistral as a possible contender to OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT.
The company’s three French co-founders, CEO Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothee Lacroix, all have backgrounds at major US tech companies, including Meta, bringing a wealth of experience to this burgeoning enterprise.
