On January 17th, Samsung is set to reveal its latest Galaxy smartphone lineup at a press conference in San Jose, California, as per a company announcement yesterday. With a significant presence in the global smartphone market, holding 20% compared to Apple’s 16%, and a 25% share in the U.S. market, Samsung is a major player and Apple’s largest competitor.
The upcoming devices, likely to be named the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, are expected to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 chips. These chips are known for enabling generative AI applications to run directly on Android phones, including on-device AI chatbots that can function without internet connectivity, enhancing privacy by keeping queries off the cloud.
Samsung’s announcement emphasized that these new phones will deliver an “all-new mobile experience powered by AI.” This could mean incorporating features similar to those found in Google’s Tensor G3 chip used in the Pixel 8 Pro, like the ability to create custom images and wallpapers from text prompts. Additionally, AI technology is increasingly being used to enhance the quality of videos and photos, as well as providing advanced functionalities like transcribing conversations and generating text message replies, as seen in the Pixel 8 Pro’s support for Google’s Gemini Nano AI model.
This launch positions Samsung to potentially attract more customers by offering novel features not available on iPhones.
