The Legendary Standup Comedian George Carlin’s Daughter Criticizes AI-produced Comedy Show Mimicking Her Deceased Father

George Carlin, renowned for revolutionizing the comedy scene, remains a prominent figure even years after his passing. His unique style and impactful comedy continue to influence the genre. Recently, the Dudesy podcast, known for its blend of comedy and technology, released an AI-generated comedy special titled “I’m Glad I’m Dead,” emulating Carlin’s style. This project, however, has been met with criticism, particularly from Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin.

“My dad spent a lifetime perfecting his craft from his very human life, brain, and imagination,” she posted on X/Twitter to address the AI-generated special. “No machine will ever replace his genius.”

“These AI-generated products are clever attempts at trying to recreate a mind that will never exist again,” she went on. “Let’s let the artist’s work speak for itself. Humans are so afraid of the void that we can’t let what has fallen into it stay there. Here’s an idea: How about we give some actual living human comedians a listen to? But if you want to listen to the genuine George Carlin, he has 14 specials that you can find anywhere.”

Hosted by Will Sasso and Chad Kultgen, along with an AI “host,” the Dudesy podcast and YouTube channel presented this special 15 years after Carlin’s demise due to heart failure at the age of 71. The creators described the project as akin to “Andy Kaufman impersonating Elvis or Will Ferrell impersonating George W. Bush.” They aimed to replicate Carlin’s iconic mannerisms, addressing contemporary topics they believe Carlin would have tackled.

This is part of a broader trend where AI is increasingly integrated into various creative fields. After the initial buzz around AI chat services like ChatGPT, the focus shifted to its applications in entertainment. Projects like an AI-driven show inspired by “Seinfeld” and various AI-generated art pieces have been subject to scrutiny from major figures in creative industries.

The gaming industry, too, has seen its share of controversies related to AI. Embark Studios, creators of the hit game “The Finals,” faced backlash for using AI voiceovers. While they clarified their approach of mixing recorded and AI-generated voices, the debate around AI’s role in gaming persists.

Efforts to address these challenges are underway. For instance, Cissy Jones’ start-up Morpheme aims to ethically integrate AI technology, focusing on the authenticity of synthetic voices. Scott Mortman, an advisor for Morpheme, highlighted the rapid paradigm shift in AI’s application and its ethical implications.

However, the controversy continues, especially in the wake of SAG-AFTRA’s recent deal with AI company Replica Studios, which sparked concerns among video game voice actors. The release of Carlin’s AI-generated comedy special by Dudesy thus falls into a complex and often contentious landscape where the boundaries and ethics of AI in creative fields are still being navigated.
