Singapore is on track to become a global AI hub, according to Caroline Yap, managing director of global AI business and applied engineering at Google Cloud, who emphasized the necessity of robust public and private partnerships for AI’s success on Wednesday.

Speaking at the Explore AI summit, Yap highlighted the fruitful outcomes of the “AI Trailblazers” initiative, a collaboration between Google Cloud and Singapore’s government, which facilitated 43 organizations in developing their own AI solutions. Singapore’s proactive stance on AI, including the launch of the National AI Strategy 2.0, has established a conducive environment for innovation and positioned it as a rising star in the AI domain, as noted by the Center for Security and Emerging Technology.

“In order for AI to really deliver on its potential, you need really good public and private partnerships …when you do have good public and private partnerships, you can really start to not just improve the public sector use cases like citizen services, but you can also foster an environment for innovation.”

— Caroline Yap, managing director, global AI business and applied engineering at Google Cloud

The initiative not only advances technological capabilities but also promotes inclusive growth, ensuring that Singaporeans benefit as consumers and participants in the innovative economy. However, the competition for AI talent poses a challenge for Singapore’s ambitions. The country’s efforts in promoting responsible AI use, demonstrated by the introduction of AI Verify, further strengthen its position in the global AI landscape, receiving acknowledgment from leading tech companies.
