Google Halts Image Creation of Individuals by Gemini AI Model Amid Inaccuracy Concerns

Google has temporarily halted its AI tool designed for generating images of people due to inaccuracies found in some of the historical images produced, marking another setback in its quest to compete with OpenAI and Microsoft.

This decision came after users on social media highlighted inaccuracies in historical images generated by Google’s Gemini AI models, which were introduced earlier this month. The move reflects Google’s ongoing efforts to match the advancements in AI software pioneered by OpenAI, notably since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022.

“We’re aware that Gemini is offering inaccuracies in some historical image generation depictions,” Google had said on Wednesday.

Previously, Google faced challenges when its generative AI chatbot Bard, now known as Gemini, disseminated incorrect information in a promotional video, leading to a significant drop in its shares. Recently, Google introduced paid subscription plans for Gemini, offering enhanced reasoning capabilities.

“Historical contexts have more nuance to them and we will further tune to accommodate that,” said Jack Krawczyk, Senior Director of Product for Gemini at Google, on Wednesday.
