The Turing Institute Names Four Directors to Tackle Major Societal Issues with Data Science & AI

This month has seen The Alan Turing Institute enhance its leadership with the addition of four Directors of Science and Innovation, aiming to leverage data science and AI to tackle critical societal challenges. This move aligns with the Turing’s strategy to focus on environmental sustainability, health, and defense and national security while maintaining a foundation in fundamental AI and data science research. The directors, drawn from prestigious institutions, bring expertise in their respective fields to drive the Institute’s mission-focused programs.

Marc Deisenroth will lead efforts on environmental sustainability, Andrew Duncan will oversee fundamental research, Aldo Faisal will concentrate on health improvements, and Tim Watson will focus on defense and national security. Each director brings a wealth of experience and achievement from their previous roles, poised to advance the Turing’s goals in collaboration with national and international partners.

This strategic initiative is part of the Turing’s broader mission to ensure AI and data science contribute positively to society, with special advisers Jon Crowcroft and Mike Wooldridge further bolstering the Institute’s scientific leadership. The Turing’s commitment to a challenge-led approach and the anticipation of new mission priorities reflect its dedication to making a significant impact in addressing global challenges through AI and data science.
