Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is forming a specialized team to address disinformation and misuse of generative AI before the European Parliament elections in June, highlighting concerns over election integrity and AI-generated falsehoods.
With elections scheduled for June 6–9, Meta aims to safeguard the electoral process, drawing on a cross-functional team of experts in intelligence, data science, and legal disciplines to fight misinformation and AI abuse. Additionally, Meta plans to expand its network of independent fact-checking organizations in the EU, adding partners in Bulgaria, France, and Slovakia.
This move follows a collective agreement with other tech giants, including Microsoft and OpenAI, to combat AI-driven disinformation globally.
“As the election approaches, we’ll activate an Elections Operations Center to identify potential threats and put mitigations in place in real time,” stated Marco Pancini, Meta’s head of EU affairs, in a blogpost.
