NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang Predicts AI Will Surpass Human Benchmark Tests Within Five Years at Stanford Economic Policy Summit

At the 2024 Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research Summit last week, NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang discussed the timeline for achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). He suggested that AGI could potentially meet human benchmarks within five years, depending on how such goals are defined. All this comes after NVIDIA reached $2 trillion market value milestone last Friday.

“If I gave an AI … every single test that you can possibly imagine, you make that list of tests and put it in front of the computer science industry, and I’m guessing in five years time, we’ll do well on every single one,” said Huang.

Highlighting current AI capabilities, Huang noted that AI systems have passed certain professional exams but face challenges in more specialized fields like gastroenterology. However, he expects these hurdles to be overcome within the next five years, marking significant progress towards AGI.

NVIDIA’S CEO also stated that achieving certain objectives can be challenging for engineers because they require clearly defined goals. He further mentioned the necessity for more fabrication plants (fabs) but highlighted that improvements in algorithms and AI processing are being made significantly over time. Huang emphasized that the efficiency of computing is not static and projected an improvement in computing power by a million times over the next decade.

Huang’s comments underline the rapid advancements in AI, while also acknowledging the ongoing debate over the precise nature of human intelligence and the technological and infrastructure needs to support AI’s growth.
