DeepMind’s Hassabis Warns AI Funding Surge May Lead to Excessive Hype

Demis Hassabis, chief of Google DeepMind, cautions that the current surge in AI funding, nearing $30 billion in 2023 according to PitchBook, could lead to excessive hype and potentially unscrupulous practices, he said in a recnet interview.

“In a way, AI’s not hyped enough but in some senses it’s too hyped,” Hassabis told the Financial Times in a story published Sunday. “We’re talking about all sorts of things that are just not real.” Hassabis also mentioned that he finds it a bit unfortunate how some aspects have now spilled over into AI. He believes this overshadows the phenomenal science and research in the field.

Google DeepMind, aiming to advance the field of AI, finds itself at the heart of a funding frenzy that Hassabis believes might not entirely reflect the technology’s current state. This trend was exemplified when Amazon revealed plans for a $4 billion investment in AI startup Anthropic, underscoring the high stakes and intense interest in AI’s potential.
