Elon Musk forecasts that artificial intelligence (AI) could outsmart humans by next year or by 2026. During an X spaces interview marred by technical issues, Musk, CEO of the newly founded xAI, discussed AI’s limitations, including electricity availability and chip shortages.
“If you define AGI (artificial general intelligence) as smarter than the smartest human, I think it’s probably next year, within two years,” said Musk about a timeline for the development of AGI when queried.
He highlighted challenges in training Grok, xAI’s chatbot, mentioning the current reliance on 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs for Grok 2 and future needs for 100,000 chips for subsequent models. Musk, who has legal disputes with OpenAI, emphasizes the importance of AI development for humanity’s benefit. Additionally, he acknowledged the competitive edge of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers against Tesla.
