Google Merges DeepMind & Research Divisions to Strengthen AI Development Efforts

Alphabet-owned Google announced it will merge its AI model-building teams from the Research and DeepMind divisions to bolster its AI portfolio, according to a Thursday blog post.

The move includes relocating the Responsible AI teams to DeepMind, enhancing focus on safe AI development amid global AI safety concerns and regulatory demands. This restructuring follows the development of Google’s advanced AI model, Gemini, which faced scrutiny over inaccuracies before Google paused its image generation features.

Previously, Google had integrated Google Brain with DeepMind to intensify AI development and compete with rivals like Microsoft, which recently appointed DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman to lead its consumer AI unit. The reorganization aligns with Google’s broader strategy of reducing costs while increasing its commitment to AI and automation.
