Centaur Robotics, based in Birmingham, has received £500,000 from the Midlands Engine Investment Fund (MEIF I), managed by Midven through the MEIF West Midlands Equity Fund, along with additional investments from Seedrs and angel investors. The funding will support the final development and production of their innovative product, the Centaur — a self-balancing electric wheelchair designed for enhanced mobility within homes.
Unlike traditional wheelchairs, the Centaur operates on two wheels, offering greater maneuverability and fitting through standard doorways. The design, led by former Ford Motor Company designer Paul Campbell, focuses on user dignity and aesthetic appeal, addressing the mobility needs of the UK’s 1.2 million wheelchair users.
The wheelchair also features a seat that elevates to bar stool height, promoting independence and accessibility in less accommodating environments. Midven has facilitated introductions for Centaur Robotics within the mobility sector, further supporting the company’s growth and development.
Words from those involved in the funding round:
“Centaur Robotics is at the forefront of revolutionising mobility solutions for wheelchair users. This investment marks a significant milestone in their journey, allowing them to bring their innovative self-balancing electric wheelchair to production.”
— Tony Stott, Investment Director at Midven

We are not just building a chair; we are crafting a future where mobility solutions enhance independence and contribute to a more inclusive society.”
— Eric Kihlstrom, CEO of Centaur Robotics
“The Midlands Engine Investment Fund supports innovative small businesses in the Midlands that will have a positive impact on local economies. This funding from the MEIF in Centaur Robotics for its revolutionary wheelchair will help enrich the lives of wheelchair users through improved mobility solutions and enhance independent living.”
