Microsoft, Amazon Pledge $5.6B Investment in France, Bolstering AI & Cloud Capabilities as Macron Engages Tech Leaders

On Monday, Microsoft announced a commitment of 4 billion euros ($4.3 billion) to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in France. This includes funding for AI training and support for the local tech industry. Microsoft plans to deploy up to 25,000 advanced GPUs in France by the end of 2025, train 1 million people, and support 2,500 AI startups by 2027. Additionally, Microsoft will open a new data center in Mulhouse.

Amazon also pledged to invest 1.2 billion euros in France. This investment aims to create over 3,000 jobs, adding to the 2,000 new jobs already planned for 2024, and to expand Amazon’s presence in the country, according to Frederic Duval, Amazon’s country manager.

“This major investment demonstrates a steadfast commitment to supporting digital innovation and economic growth in France,” said Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith, in a statement Monday. “We are building state-of-the-art Cloud and AI infrastructure, training people with AI skills, and supporting French startups as they use our technology with confidence to grow in a fair and responsible way.”

While Frederic Duval, Amazon’s country manager, said: “The expansion of our logistics network supports local economic development, creates quality jobs and allows us to reduce the carbon footprint of our deliveries while improving the overall customer experience.”
