As the AI revolution gathers momentum, there is a rising risk of getting trapped in polarized mindsets that exclude different perspectives, warned Michael Rosenberg, a lifelong creative with ten years of experience leading teams to tackle significant design challenges. In his interesting TEDx talk, he urged people to move beyond the simplistic optimist vs skeptic dichotomy regarding AI’s impacts.
“These mindsets are unhelpful because they’re all rooted in a subtle kind of division,” Rosenberg stated. He highlights how such division, if left to fester, could prove disastrous: “Division will be the seed of our destruction.”
Drawing from his ancestors’ experiences fleeing persecution, Rosenberg develops “a deep seated conviction that while division holds the seed of our destruction, our differences hold the key to our salvation.”
This motivated him to create the “Human Friendly” community, spanning over 12 time zones, to foster inclusive dialogue about the futures people want to create with AI.
“When you ask people how they feel about artificial intelligence, their answers are not about technology — their answers are about humanity,” Rosenberg explained.
Through deep listening to this community’s conversations, three distinct “mindsets” emerged — the optimistic “Pioneers”, risk-conscious “Guardians”, and integrating “Navigators”. However, Rosenberg stressed these are “inter-dependencies” rather than positions on a spectrum.
“These mindsets are not on a spectrum — by identifying with one of them, you are not far away from another mindset. These mindsets are inter-relationships, I would even say these mindsets are inter-dependencies, they rely on each other for us to have a human-friendly future.”
The Human Friendly tools aim to help people identify their core beliefs, find kindred spirits, and then bridge divides through curiosity and collaboration on shared visions. As Rosenberg resonantly concludes: “Your voice belongs in the AI age…how will we live into a human-friendly future in the age of AI?”
By reframing AI dialogues around our common hopes for humanity, Rosenberg charts a path beyond technological polarization towards inclusive future-building. The invitation is open — which “mindset” will you embody?
