DeepL CEO Stresses Nuanced AI Translation’s Crucial Role in Global Business

As reported by AI Insider this week, DeepL, the AI language translation startup, announced a $300 million funding round valuing the company at $2 billion. In an interview with CNBC, DeepL CEO Jarek Kutylowski discussed the importance of nuanced translation for businesses.

Kutylowski, who moved from Poland to Germany as a child, talked about his personal experience driving his passion: “Having grown up the very first days in Poland, then moved over to Germany, being kind of dumped into a school in Germany without understanding a word of the language, I think it gave me an understanding of how important language is.”

DeepL uses advanced AI to provide context-aware translations tailored for different domains and situations.

“When you consider like a legal document you really don’t want that sound like the surf shop website,” Kutylowski explained. “The good thing the AI is usually powerful enough to really understand what the context is of what you’re talking about.”

He stressed the value this provides businesses operating globally: “If you give it enough context it will be able to figure out a lot about how to translate and which language and terminology to use for that. That’s super essential for business.”

As AI translation comes of age, companies like DeepL will enable frictionless communication around the world for companies in every field. With a recent downpour of funding from investors, DeepL is, doubtless, among the best-placed to seize this burgeoned market.
