Catholic Answers, a prominent Catholic advocacy organization, recently ventured into the world of artificial intelligence (AI) by creating an AI-powered chatbot named Father Justin. This innovative project aimed to leverage technology to spread the Catholic faith and answer questions about doctrine. However, the experiment quickly faced challenges and raised important questions about the role of AI in religious contexts.
Christopher Czech, President of Catholic Answers, expressed initial enthusiasm for the project in a CNN report.
“I’m a huge proponent of using technology for good, and I think AI has a lot of promise,” said Czech. The organization saw AI as a tool to reach a broader audience with Catholic teachings.
However, the AI priest soon encountered issues. In one instance, Father Justin incorrectly suggested that Gatorade could be used for baptism. Czech acknowledged this error, explaining: “He did find that answer at what we would have regarded to be a respectable source. We have since corrected that and we’ve owned it, and he will not repeat that error.”
The controversy led to quick adjustments, including removing the “Father” title from the AI. John Sorenson, CEO of Catholic Answers, reflected on this decision, when they realized that the priest character was interfering with their goals for the platform, so they decided to change it immediately. In fact, they noted that the adjustment took about an hour.
Despite the setbacks, Catholic Answers remains committed to exploring AI’s potential in religious education. It has stated that AI is now a reality, presenting two choices: to ignore its presence and deny its potential applications in spreading the faith, or to acknowledge and embrace it. He emphasized that he did not believe in ignoring AI’s relevance.
This experiment with an AI priest has sparked a broader discussion about the intersection of technology and faith. It demonstrates both the potential and pitfalls of using AI in religious contexts, highlighting the need for careful consideration and ongoing refinement as organizations navigate this new frontier.
