OpenAI in Talks with Broadcom to Develop New AI Chip

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, is reportedly in talks with chip designers, including Broadcom, to develop a new artificial intelligence chip. The move is driven by the need to address the shortage of expensive graphic processing units essential for developing AI models like ChatGPT, GPT-4, and DALL-E3.

“OpenAI is having ongoing conversations with industry and government stakeholders about increasing access to the infrastructure needed to ensure AI’s benefits are widely accessible,” a spokesperson for OpenAI told the Information.

To tackle this issue, OpenAI is considering making its own AI chips. The Microsoft-backed company has been hiring former Google employees who were involved in creating Google’s AI chip, the tensor processing unit. Additionally, OpenAI plans to develop an AI server chip, as reported by sources familiar with the matter.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg News revealed that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to raise billions of dollars to establish a network of semiconductor manufacturing factories. Potential partners for this ambitious project include Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, and Samsung Electronics.
