“We used to chase dragons — now we chase algorithms,” Jacob Rangel began in his TEDxFolsom talk, laying the groundwork for a compelling discussion on the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI). As an AI explorer who lost his job as a copywriter to AI, Rangel views this change not as a loss, but as an opportunity for humanity to evolve alongside intelligent machines.
Rangel’s journey with AI began after ChatGPT took the world by storm in late 2022.
“Eighteen months ago, I would be writing all this stuff from scratch,” he shared. “Now, I have a virtual writer’s room of assistants in these LLMs to help me.” This rapid shift highlights the speed at which AI is integrating into our daily lives, transforming not just how we work, but who we are.
“The story of artificial intelligence isn’t just about the rise of intelligent machines,” Rangel continued. “It’s about the transformation of humanity itself.” He pointed out that AI’s impact extends beyond mere automation — it is reshaping our society, from the way we create to how we connect.
Rangel acknowledged the potential challenges AI brings, particularly in terms of job displacement. He cited predictions from the International Monetary Fund, which estimates that up to 40% of all jobs could be affected by AI in the coming years. However, he stressed the importance of adapting to this change: “We each have a personal responsibility in how we incorporate this technology into our lives.”
Yet, despite the concerns, Rangel remains optimistic. He believes that AI could bring people together in ways never before possible.
“I actually believe it has the power to bring us together like never before,” he said, urging listeners to embrace AI while maintaining human connections, the “most ancient and sacred technology.”
As Rangel’s experience shows, AI may be taking over certain jobs, but it also opens up new possibilities. “The future ahead is one of the most fun, amazing, creative periods we’ve ever seen,” he concluded, challenging us to navigate this new era with a balance of innovation and human connection.
