BBVA Expands AI Factory to Mexico & Turkey to Boost Global AI Product Development

BBVA AI Factory, dedicated to developing AI solutions, is expanding to Mexico and Turkey, aiming to enhance the bank’s global products and internal processes. The expansion adds 230 AI professionals, doubling the team to over 400 experts across three centers. These teams work together on AI projects like creating a conversational virtual assistant and tools to improve customer relationships.

BBVA’s strategy relies on code reuse, with developers centralizing components in the Mercury library, which supports various data-driven functionalities for customers. The library has over 500 code pieces, with 100 data scientists using it monthly. Part of this code is shared on Github to foster innovation in the fintech ecosystem, with over 900 monthly downloads. Moving forward, BBVA aims to balance creating business-specific AI components while exploring trends like generative AI to continue adding value for customers.

“We are fully aligned with the needs of the business areas. We develop our analytical components to address them, which allows us to transfer the maximum value from AI to customers,” explained Ignacio Teulón, Global Head of BBVA AI Factory. “But, at the same time, our cross-cutting approach allows us to see how we can reuse these ‘lego pieces’ in other, entirely different business challenges. In this way, we optimize the work we do.”
