Ericsson & AWS: Powering Telecom’s AI-Driven Future

Ericsson and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are joining forces to drive innovation through the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs). At the recent DTW event, the companies showcased their collaborative efforts to transform the telecom industry.

According to Pierre Gustafsson, head of AI business management at Ericsson, the partnership is a game-changer.

“The collaboration together is going to make a very big difference for the telecom industry and is really important for us,” said Gustafsson, before explaining that the combination of Ericsson’s extensive telecom experience with AWS’s expertise in cloud environments and AI, particularly in large language models, will significantly impact the telecom industry through their strategic collaboration.

Ericsson has long been at the forefront of AI integration in the telecom sector. Gustafsson noted: “We at Ericsson, we’ve been working with AI and LLMs for a long time. The last few years, we’ve worked specifically on how to fine-tune and build LLMs for Telecom. ELI is Ericsson Language Intelligence, that’s how we have attacked and adopted LLMs in Ericsson.”

The partnership with AWS allows Ericsson to leverage the cloud giant’s expertise in AI and LLMs, creating a powerful synergy.

“GENI has created a boom for the whole industry. You know AI used to be something that with it in the background, now when it’s in the hands of the consumers, things are happening really fast,” Gustafsson observed.

At DTW, the companies showcased two AI-powered demonstrations: one focused on intelligent interaction with telecom networks, and another on automated 5G network slicing and scaling. These innovations showcase the potential of AI to transform the telecom industry, from enhancing customer experiences to optimizing network operations.

As the telecom landscape continues to evolve, the Ericsson-AWS collaboration represents a strategic move to harness the power of AI and LLMs to drive the industry forward. As Gustafsson concluded: “Putting that partner and strategic collaboration together is going to make a very big difference for the Telecom industry.”
