Elon Musk has publicly endorsed California’s SB 1047, a proposed law that mandates creators of large AI models to implement and document measures to prevent their technologies from causing significant harm. Although Musk has pledged to move his AI company, xAI, out of California, the company would still fall under the bill’s regulations.
“This is a tough call and will make some people upset, but, all things considered, I think California should probably pass the SB 1047 AI safety bill,” he wrote on X earlier this week. “For over 20 years, I have been an advocate for AI regulation, just as we regulate any product/technology that is a potential risk.”
Musk has consistently voiced concerns about the potential risks of unchecked AI. In contrast, OpenAI, a competing AI firm, has expressed opposition to SB 1047, favoring a different legislative approach.
