Without trying to make it sound too obvious to those familiar with the tech space, AI startups face unique challenges and opportunities. On this, Mazhar Memon, founder and CEO of OSCI Labs, was recently interviewed on this topic and into how emerging companies can thrive in this competitive space.
Memon argued that the traditional advantage of startups — their agility — is being challenged in the AI era.
“Historically, tech startups have one huge advantage, which is that they are faster and nimbler than the bigger players,” he said. “What’s a little bit different in this environment is that a lot of the bigger incumbents, they have access to the biggest models earlier. And so not only do they have distribution, but now they have speed.”
This shift necessitates a new approach for startups. Memon advised against trying to compete directly on AI capabilities: “We don’t treat AI capability, whether it’s model or data or compute, as a strategic differentiator. We believe it’s something that you can’t easily capture value from.”
Instead, he recommends a different strategy: “Don’t build the AI but use it voraciously.” By leveraging existing AI tools, startups can accelerate their development processes and tackle more ambitious problems.
“You can do engineering a lot faster, which means you can explore deep tech. You can solve really fundamental human problems like life expectancy, health, energy, access to food, access to clean water,” Memon explained.
This approach allows startups to focus on their core strengths and unique value propositions, rather than getting bogged down in AI development. It also enables them to move quickly and adapt to market needs — a crucial advantage in the fast-paced tech world.
Memon offered a roadmap for AI startups navigating this complex landscape. Utilizing AI as a tool, not a product, and focusing on solving basic problems, these companies can carve out their niche and make a real difference. These strategies offer a path forward for innovative startups ready to change the world in an industry where giants hold all the cards.
