As Latin America’s largest economy, Brazil stands as a digital powerhouse. Fabio Coelho, President of Google Brazil, sees the advancement of AI as crucial for the nation’s continued development in the technology space.
“Brazilians have a love affair with technology,” Coelho said in a recent interview, describing how the country’s large market and entrepreneurial spirit have fostered Brazil’s position as a leading digital economy in the region.
AI, Coelho believes, will play a transformative role in addressing Brazil’s unique challenges and opportunities.
“Efficiency in an economy like Brazil’s, which is an emerging market, is pretty important,” he explained. By bringing AI-driven tools to citizens and businesses, Google Brazil aims to enhance productivity and ensure the nation remains competitive on a global scale. The popularity of Google’s platforms, including YouTube, shows how Brazilians are eager for technological solutions that resonate with their daily lives.
Yet, Coelho is aware of AI’s potential risks, especially concerning privacy and data protection. For Brazil, AI innovation must align with ethical principles and the values of a diverse society.
“We need to be bold and at the same time responsible about the use of AI,” he stated. In Brazil, this approach has roots in the country’s Internet framework, the Marco Civil da Internet, which celebrates a decade of establishing a precedent for collaboration between society, businesses, and regulators.
Through initiatives like the Google Campus in São Paulo, which has supported 450 startups over the past eight years, Coelho affirms Google’s commitment to cultivating Brazil’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
“We do not want to castrate the ecosystem of innovation and development, which is so important in Brazil,” said Coelho. In supporting tech-driven growth, Google Brazil sees a robust AI-integrated economy where businesses, government, and citizens all benefit from responsible, cutting-edge technology.
