Buddy Secures $1.1M in Pre-seed Funding to Boost Real-world Social Interactions

Buddy, the Los Angeles-based social utility app that encourages real-life connections, has raised $1.1 million in pre-seed funding from industry veterans including Tim Willits, former creative head at Saber Interactive, and Vince Zampella, co-founder of Respawn Entertainment. Gaming pioneer Dennis Fong, known as the first professional gamer and CEO of GGWP, also joins Buddy as an adviser, strengthening its mission with his experience in digital safety.

Founder and CEO Claire Wright shared that Buddy’s goal is to move beyond traditional social media models and foster genuine interactions. She noted that the app “empowers people to truly live life, connect, and thrive,” free from the metrics and pressures of conventional platforms. Designed with Gen Z and Gen Alpha in mind, Buddy combines an intuitive, lo-fi design with AI-driven gamification that rewards users for engaging in real-life activities, rather than scrolling through screens.

Buddy’s unique features include a patented mesh technology that allows for real-time location-based interactions even without cellular or Wi-Fi networks, making it possible to stay connected with friends anywhere. The app’s “Loop” feature lets users check in with quick status updates, such as “On my way” or “Leaving in 5!” without full messaging, while temporary “Spot” tips encourage shared discoveries like favorite coffee spots or quiet picnic areas. These interactions disappear within 24 hours, creating a dynamic and private experience.

Tim Willits, a parent of Gen Z triplets, said Buddy’s focus on fostering safe and real-world connections resonates deeply with him. Vince Zampella echoed the excitement around Buddy’s mission, calling it “an exciting cultural shift” toward meaningful, in-person engagement. Dennis Fong remarked that Buddy’s vision of non-toxic, healthy connections aligns with his own commitment to user well-being.

Buddy is currently in beta on iOS, with a full launch expected in 2025.
