ServiceNow CEO Bill McDermott on AI’s Role in Transforming Business

In a dynamic conversation with CNBC during his visit to Singapore, Bill McDermott, Chairman and CEO of ServiceNow, revealed his ambitious vision for leveraging AI to redefine enterprise software. As a seasoned leader who previously propelled SAP to new heights, McDermott now aims to position ServiceNow as the ultimate AI-driven platform for business transformation.

McDermott doesn’t mince words when describing the potential of artificial intelligence.

“There’s nothing like AI,” he declared. “We’re changing every workflow in every industry for every persona in every corporation, and that will happen in the next two years.” For McDermott, AI is not just an evolution; it’s a revolution, poised to streamline operations and accelerate outcomes across sectors.

While competition in the AI space is fierce, McDermott is confident in ServiceNow’s unique position.

“We have a platform that pans and spans all [silos],” he explained. Unlike other providers that specialize in specific domains, ServiceNow integrates seamlessly with legacy systems across finance, HR, and sales, offering a “clean pane of glass powered by AI.” This holistic approach enables businesses to manage their operations through a single, intuitive portal.

ServiceNow’s collaboration with NVIDIA, led by CEO Jensen Huang, underscores its commitment to innovation.

“Jensen calls [ServiceNow] the AI operating system for the enterprise, and who might argue with him?” shared McDermott. Their joint efforts, including a security defense initiative, aim to enhance AI-driven risk management solutions globally. “It’s a virtuous cycle of innovation, management of risk, and brilliant elite-level execution,” he added, emphasizing the transformative impact of their partnership.

ServiceNow’s workforce has quadrupled under McDermott’s leadership, with the company maintaining a strong hiring streak even through the pandemic.

“We have one and a half million applicants to come into ServiceNow this year,” he stated. Beyond hiring, McDermott highlights the ecosystem effect: “For every person we hire, our ecosystem is hiring 10 times that number.”

The company’s culture plays a crucial role in attracting top talent. McDermott credits ServiceNow’s trust and mission-driven approach, saying: “There’s such trust and such love in our company for the mission that we’re on to change the world.”

McDermott’s vision for ServiceNow is as audacious as it is clear. He envisions the company’s growth trajectory between now and 2030: “The dreams I have for the company start with T, not B.” With revenue aspirations in the trillions, he believes ServiceNow is uniquely positioned to solve modern challenges while capitalizing on emerging opportunities.

His message to potential clients is equally bold: “You don’t have to go on the forced march you’ve been on for the last half-century. There is a better way to do this. Let us help.”

As ServiceNow continues its AI-driven journey, McDermott remains steadfast in his belief that the company’s innovations will define the enterprise software landscape. With a focus on integration, security, and cultural strength, he is determined to lead ServiceNow in reshaping the way businesses operate, creating value at an unprecedented scale.
