Alibaba has released Qwen 2.5-Max, its latest AI model, claiming it outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4o, Meta’s Llama-3.1–405B, and the recently launched DeepSeek-V3. The timing of the launch, on the first day of the Lunar New Year, underscores the competitive pressure within China’s AI industry, particularly after DeepSeek’s rapid ascent.
DeepSeek has shaken the AI landscape with the January 10 release of its DeepSeek-V3 assistant and the January 20 launch of its R1 model, which has reportedly rivaled OpenAI’s o1 model in key performance benchmarks. The emergence of DeepSeek has not only caused Silicon Valley tech stocks to drop but also spurred Chinese AI giants, including ByteDance and Alibaba, to accelerate their own AI advancements.
Amid speculation, Alibaba has denied reports that it intends to invest $1 billion in DeepSeek. Vice President Yan Qiao stated on her personal WeChat account that rumors of an Alibaba-DeepSeek investment were false, stressing that while the company admires DeepSeek’s progress, it has no plans for financial involvement.
