The UK AI Security Institute has launched the first-ever Challenge Fund, a £5 million initiative aimed at addressing critical AI security risks, safeguarding national infrastructure, and enhancing public confidence in AI adoption. As part of the government’s Plan for Change, the fund seeks to mitigate AI misuse, fortify AI resilience, and accelerate economic growth by fostering a secure AI ecosystem.
With AI increasingly integrated into sectors such as finance, healthcare, and energy, the risk of systemic disruptions due to failure or misuse has grown. This initiative will fund cutting-edge research to ensure AI systems are secure, resilient, and trustworthy. Grants of up to £200,000 per project will be awarded to researchers tackling key AI security challenges, including developing safeguards against AI exploitation, enhancing human oversight over autonomous systems, and reinforcing the UK’s technological infrastructure against emerging threats.
Minister for AI and Digital Government Feryal Clark emphasized the government’s commitment to AI safety, stating that ensuring AI is both secure and trusted is essential for unlocking its full potential. She highlighted the fund’s role in fostering world-class research to address the toughest security challenges while enabling AI to drive economic productivity and improve public services.
The fund aligns with the UK’s broader AI security strategy, focusing on four key areas: preventing AI system failures, reducing risks of AI misuse, strengthening human oversight, and securing AI-driven critical infrastructure. AI Security Institute Chair Ian Hogarth underscored the importance of tackling AI’s most pressing risks, noting that funding high-impact research will provide the evidence base necessary to develop real-world security solutions.
By investing in AI safety, the Challenge Fund aims to bolster public trust, drive AI adoption, and position the UK as a global leader in responsible AI development. Grants will be available to researchers and non-profit organizations worldwide, prioritizing projects that deliver tangible security innovations and contribute to the UK’s long-term technological resilience.
