OpenAI Develops Advanced AI Model for Creative Writing Amid Ongoing Copyright Debate

OpenAI has unveiled a new artificial intelligence model capable of advanced creative writing, according to CEO Sam Altman. While the model remains unnamed and unreleased, Altman described it as the first time he had been “really struck” by AI-generated writing.

The development comes as AI companies, including OpenAI, face legal challenges over copyright infringement. The New York Times and authors such as Ta-Nehisi Coates and Sarah Silverman have sued AI firms for training models on copyrighted content without permission.

Altman shared an AI-generated short story on social media, prompting renewed concerns from the UK Publishers Association, which stated the model’s capabilities were “further proof” of AI systems being trained on copyrighted literary works.

The debate intensifies as global policymakers evaluate regulations on AI training data usage, with OpenAI asserting that training models without copyrighted material would be impossible.
