SoftBank Group has announced it will acquire semiconductor company Ampere Computing in an all-cash deal valued at $6.5 billion, marking a significant expansion of its AI infrastructure portfolio. The acquisition is expected to close in the second half of 2025, with Ampere operating as a wholly owned subsidiary.
Founded by former Intel executive Renee James, Ampere designs high-performance chips based on the Arm architecture, serving major cloud providers including Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle. SoftBank, already Arm’s largest shareholder, said the acquisition enhances its commitment to next-generation AI compute.
Masayoshi Son, SoftBank CEO, stated the deal positions the group to accelerate breakthroughs in artificial superintelligence through scalable, efficient semiconductor innovation.
