Epoch Biodesign, a UK-based startup using AI and synthetic biology to recycle plastics, has raised $18.3 million in Series A funding, with an additional $1 million grant from the UK government. Led by Extantia Capital, the round included backing from Inditex, Lowercarbon Capital, and other global investors.
Founded by Jacob Nathan, Epoch engineers enzymes that break down plastic waste into reusable chemical building blocks. The company integrates AI, robotics, and biology to improve recycling efficiency and performance, aiming to outperform virgin materials in both cost and quality.
With over 40 industrial partners and a team of 30 in London, Epoch plans to process tens of thousands of tonnes of plastic waste by 2028.
