Bowdoin College has received a historic $50 million gift from Reed Hastings, cofounder of Netflix and CEO of Powder Mountain, to establish the Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity. The initiative, now launched, marks the largest donation in Bowdoin’s 231-year history.
Hastings, a 1983 Bowdoin graduate and AI expert, said the initiative aims to deepen the College’s engagement with artificial intelligence as a transformative global force. President Safa Zaki, a cognitive scientist, emphasized that Bowdoin’s liberal arts foundation uniquely equips students to confront AI’s ethical and societal implications. The program will support faculty research, interdisciplinary hiring, and education that centers human values in AI development.
