OpenAI has closed a historic $40 billion funding round, valuing the company at $300 billion post-money, in one of the largest private capital raises to date. SoftBank led the round, with participation from Microsoft, Coatue, Altimeter, and Thrive — all existing investors.

In a blog post, OpenAI stated that the funding will accelerate AI research, expand compute infrastructure, and scale tools like ChatGPT, which now serves over 500 million weekly users. The company said its collaboration with SoftBank will help scale transformative technologies. According to CNBC, approximately $18 billion of the capital will support Stargate, OpenAI’s planned U.S. network of advanced AI data centers.
