Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke Tells Employees: Embrace AI or Justify Why You Can’t

Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke is reshaping the company’s hiring philosophy to prioritize artificial intelligence, urging employees to fully integrate AI into their daily work. In a recent internal memo, Lütke told staff they must now justify any request for added headcount by explaining why the task cannot be completed using AI.

He described AI as a “multiplier” of productivity and said that employees who embrace it have achieved “100X the work” on previously implausible tasks. Shopify will now include AI usage in performance evaluations.

The move aligns with broader industry trends as tech firms double down on AI investments while trimming other costs. Shopify’s own tools, including Sidekick and Shopify Magic, reflect that shift in product and strategy.
