GitHub, Microsoft’s developer platform, introduced a new Copilot coding agent this week designed to autonomously handle programming tasks and streamline software development workflows. Announced at Microsoft’s Build developer conference, the AI agent can take on issues assigned within GitHub, notify users upon completion, and suggest code changes directly within existing projects.
Powered by Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet model, the agent executes tasks such as bug fixes, feature additions, code refactoring, and documentation enhancements. GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke stated the tool excels at “low-to-medium complexity tasks in well-tested codebases.”
Currently in preview, the agent is available to Copilot Pro+ and Copilot Enterprise subscribers. GitHub’s Copilot now serves over 15 million users, reflecting Microsoft’s broader push to embed generative AI into its development ecosystem.
