U.S.-China Tensions Reignite Over Huawei AI Chip Export Restrictions

Tensions between the United States and China have reignited following new U.S. export guidelines targeting Huawei’s AI chips. China’s Commerce Ministry issued a statement this week threatening legal action against entities that comply with U.S. restrictions on Huawei’s Ascend AI processors, escalating the ongoing dispute over semiconductor access.

The warning comes in direct response to guidance issued by the Trump administration on May 13, which initially stated that the use of Huawei’s AI chips “anywhere in the world” would violate U.S. export controls. The move followed the revocation of President Biden’s Artificial Intelligence Diffusion rule.

China accused the U.S. of undermining recent trade negotiations, while the U.S. Commerce Department has since softened the language, removing the “anywhere in the world” clause.
