The New York Times Strikes Landmark AI Content Licensing Deal with Amazon

The New York Times has signed its first generative AI licensing agreement, granting Amazon access to its editorial content to train the tech giant’s AI models and enhance user experiences across its platforms. The deal includes content from The New York Times, NYT Cooking, and The Athletic, and may be integrated into Amazon services such as Alexa.

In a statement, The Times said the partnership would bring its journalism to “a variety of Amazon customer experiences,” with direct links guiding users to full articles. Spokesperson Danielle Rhoades Ha added that the deal ensures proper valuation of Times content.

Terms were undisclosed, but the move marks Amazon’s first such AI licensing deal and comes amid growing publisher engagement with AI platforms.
