Leading Authors Urge Publishers to Curb Use of AI in Book Production

A coalition of prominent writers — including Lauren Groff, R.F. Kuang, Lev Grossman, Dennis Lehane, and Geoffrey Maguire — has issued an open letter demanding that publishers limit the use of artificial intelligence in the publishing process. The letter, which gained over 1,100 additional signatures within 24 hours, urges publishers to commit to employing human audiobook narrators, refrain from releasing AI-generated books, and protect human jobs from being reduced to oversight roles for AI systems.

The authors accuse AI companies of exploiting their work to train models without consent or compensation. While lawsuits have been filed against tech firms for this alleged misuse, several cases suffered setbacks in U.S. courts earlier this week, highlighting the urgency of direct industry pledges.
