Microsoft Unveils AI System That Outperforms Doctors in Complex Diagnoses

Microsoft has introduced a breakthrough artificial intelligence system capable of outperforming human doctors in complex diagnostic challenges, advancing what the company calls a “path to medical superintelligence.” Developed under the leadership of Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, the system simulates the reasoning of a panel of expert clinicians and demonstrated significantly higher accuracy than unaided physicians when tested on difficult case studies from the New England Journal of Medicine.

In collaboration with OpenAI’s o3 model, Microsoft’s system solved over 80% of selected diagnostic cases — compared to just 20% solved by individual doctors working without external resources. Central to the effort is a “diagnostic orchestrator,” an agent-like AI that recommends tests and forms diagnoses across disciplines.

While not yet ready for clinical deployment, Microsoft believes the system could eventually ease pressure on global healthcare systems, offering scalable decision support for physicians and improving patient outcomes.
