Meta Hires Apple’s Head of AI Models to Bolster Superintelligence Team

Meta has reportedly recruited Ruoming Pang, Apple’s head of AI model development, in a major talent move to strengthen its newly formed AI superintelligence unit. Pang previously led the team responsible for building Apple’s core foundation models, which support Apple Intelligence and other on-device AI features.

His exit comes amid reported struggles within Apple’s AI division, which has lagged behind leading players like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta. Sources suggest Pang’s departure may signal broader instability in Apple’s AI efforts.

At Meta, Pang is expected to contribute expertise in developing compact, device-optimized AI models — an area increasingly important to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg as he accelerates hiring from major rivals including Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Safe Superintelligence.
