Microsoft Credits AI for $500M Call Center Savings Amid Wave of Layoffs

Microsoft’s Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff has revealed that the company saved over $500 million in its call center operations last year by integrating AI tools across sales, support, and engineering workflows. The remarks, delivered during an internal presentation and reported by Bloomberg, highlighted how Microsoft is using generative AI to boost productivity and reduce operational costs.

The announcement follows a series of workforce reductions, including more than 9,000 layoffs last week, bringing the total to roughly 15,000 for the year. While Microsoft posted $26 billion in quarterly profit and a $3.74 trillion market cap, it is redirecting investment toward AI infrastructure, with $80 billion earmarked for 2025 — underscoring a shift toward automation over headcount.
