OpenAI Launches Stargate Norway, Its First European AI Data Center, in $2B Partnership with Nscale and Aker

OpenAI has announced plans to launch Stargate Norway, its first AI data center in Europe, through a joint venture with British cloud infrastructure firm Nscale and Norwegian energy company Aker. The project, located near Narvik in northern Norway, aims to deliver up to 290 megawatts of compute capacity powered entirely by renewable energy and cooled by advanced liquid systems.

Stargate Norway will initially run on 100,000 Nvidia GPUs and prioritize access for Norwegian AI startups and researchers, underscoring a commitment to European compute sovereignty. Though separate from the EU’s €30B AI infrastructure plan, the center aligns with Europe’s regulatory focus on sustainability and transparency in AI.

OpenAI, which will act as a capacity off-taker, continues expanding its global infrastructure footprint, following recent announcements of Stargate UAE, a $500B U.S. buildout, and a partnership with the U.K. government to accelerate AI deployment.
