Anthropic Reaches Settlement in Book-Training Lawsuit with Authors

Anthropic has reached a settlement in the class action lawsuit Bartz v. Anthropic, resolving claims over its use of books to train large language models. The agreement was disclosed in a filing with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, ending the company’s ongoing appeal of a lower court decision.

The earlier ruling had found Anthropic’s use of books for AI training constituted fair use but noted that many of the works were obtained through pirated sources, leaving the company exposed to financial penalties. Terms of the settlement remain confidential.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs welcomed the resolution, calling it a historic outcome for authors. Anthropic has not yet provided further comment, with additional details expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
