OpenAI’s Nick Turley Outlines Vision to Transform ChatGPT into an AI Operating System

Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, has revealed the company’s next major step for its flagship product: evolving ChatGPT from a conversational tool into a full AI operating system powered by third-party applications. Speaking during OpenAI’s Developer Day in San Francisco, Turley said the shift will allow ChatGPT’s 800 million weekly users to access a growing ecosystem of interactive apps for writing, coding, shopping, and learning — all within a unified AI platform.

The new app ecosystem is central to OpenAI’s strategy to integrate businesses like Expedia, Uber, and DoorDashdirectly into ChatGPT, turning the chatbot into a transactional and productivity hub. Developers will be able to build and deploy applications natively inside ChatGPT, reaching users during their daily interactions without separate stores or plug-ins.

Turley described this transition as a natural evolution of ChatGPT’s role in OpenAI’s broader mission to bring artificial general intelligence (AGI) to the public in accessible, beneficial ways. By positioning ChatGPT as both a delivery platform and an operating layer for AI-powered services, OpenAI aims to redefine how people and organizations interact with software — one conversation at a time.
