OpenAI has completed its long-awaited recapitalization, restructuring the organization into a for-profit entity under a non-profit foundation. The new OpenAI Foundation will oversee OpenAI Group, a public benefit corporation free to raise capital and pursue acquisitions, while maintaining public-interest governance. The Foundation holds a 26% stakewith options for expansion, Microsoft retains roughly 27%, and investors and employees share the remainder. The restructuring, approved by regulators in California and Delaware, ensures ongoing oversight on AI safety and governance. Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI has also been extended through 2032, covering future model IP rights and independent AGI verification.
In a parallel move to broaden its global reach, OpenAI announced a free one-year ChatGPT Go plan for users in India, one of its fastest-growing markets. The promotion, which also applies to existing subscribers, underscores the company’s focus on accessibility and expansion in regions driving rapid AI adoption. With a New Delhi office and local hiring underway, OpenAI is deepening its presence in India while continuing to position ChatGPT Go as an affordable, high-usage AI productivity tool for emerging markets.
