Disney Confirms Limited Exclusivity in OpenAI Licensing Deal for AI Video Generation

The Walt Disney Company has clarified that its newly announced three-year licensing partnership with OpenAIincludes just one year of exclusivity, according to comments from CEO Bob Iger. The agreement, signed last week, enables OpenAI’s Sora video generator to legally use more than 200 characters from Disney, including properties from Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars, making Sora the only AI platform currently authorized to do so.

After the initial exclusive period ends, Disney will be free to pursue similar partnerships with other AI companies, positioning the deal as a controlled test of generative AI and intellectual property licensing. The clarification came as Disney simultaneously moved to defend its IP elsewhere, issuing a cease-and-desist letter to Google over alleged unauthorized AI use of its content. The developments underscore Disney’s dual strategy of selectively partnering in AI while actively enforcing its copyrights.
