India has directed Elon Musk’s X to implement immediate technical and procedural changes to its AI chatbot Grok, following complaints from users and lawmakers over the generation of obscene and sexualized content. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued an order requiring X to block the creation and dissemination of AI-generated material involving nudity, sexualization, or other unlawful content, and to submit a compliance report within 72 hours.
The directive warns that failure to act could put X’s safe harbour protections at risk under Indian law. The action follows a formal complaint by parliamentarian Priyanka Chaturvedi and reports of Grok producing AI-altered images of women and sexualized content involving minors. The move underscores India’s growing scrutiny of AI systems as their visibility and influence on major platforms expand.
