YouTube Expands AI Tools for Shorts With Creator Likeness Capabilities

YouTube is preparing to let creators produce Shorts using AI-generated versions of their own likeness as part of a broader expansion of its creative AI toolkit. Chief executive Neal Mohan said the new capability will allow creators to experiment with AI-driven video, games, and music while positioning AI as a tool for creative expression rather than a replacement for human creators.

Shorts, which now averages around 200 billion daily views, has become one of YouTube’s fastest-growing formats, driving continued investment from the platform. The likeness feature will complement existing AI tools for Shorts, including AI-generated clips, stickers, and auto-dubbing. YouTube also plans to provide creators with controls to manage how their likeness is used, building on recently introduced detection technology designed to limit unauthorized AI-generated content and reduce the spread of low-quality material.
