X, owned by Elon Musk, is preparing to introduce labels for edited or manipulated images, signaling a renewed effort to address AI-altered media on one of the world’s most influential social platforms. The update surfaced through posts reshared by Musk, suggesting that X will flag certain visuals as manipulated, though the company has not clarified how images will be evaluated or whether traditional editing tools are included. The move echoes policies previously used by Twitter before its rebranding, but questions remain about enforcement, transparency, and how AI-generated or AI-assisted edits will be distinguished in practice.
The announcement comes as Musk deepens ties across his AI ventures. Tesla disclosed a $2 billion investment in xAI, the startup behind the Grok chatbot that also controls X. The investment followed xAI’s recently revealed $20 billion Series E round and was framed by Tesla as part of its broader strategy to integrate AI into physical systems, including autonomous vehicles, energy infrastructure, and humanoid robotics. Tesla confirmed that the companies have entered into a framework agreement to explore closer AI collaboration, building on existing relationships such as xAI data centers powered by Tesla Megapack batteries and the integration of Grok into some Tesla vehicles.
Together, the developments highlight Musk’s push to align content platforms, foundation models, and physical AI systems, even as questions persist around governance, media authenticity, and shareholder oversight.
